Some Common Questions About Implant Dentistry
“What is a dental implant?”
A dental implant is a man-made tooth root that occupies the positions that your natural teeth once held.
”What are implants made of?”
Implants are made from a biologically safe metal and are designed in various sizes to fit your individual needs.
“What are the benefits of dental implants?”
There are many benefits, both physical and emotional. Pain and discomfort are eliminated, and chewing ability is greatly increased. Implants also provide more security and remove worries about loose teeth, and lead to more confidence in social settings.
”Why do dentures become loose over time?”
When a patient wears a denture, the tissues underneath are compressed. This compression causes bone loss over time. Many long term denture wearers experience bone shrinkage to the extent that their dentures may become loose, even when using adhesives.
”How much do implants cost?”
The costs vary according to the type of implant approach best suited to your situation. Generally speaking, the fees range from $1,000 to $4,000 per implant; however, you don't necessarily need an implant for each missing tooth.
”Will my insurance cover the implants?”
Many insurance carriers help with some of the fees required for implant dentistry. It depends on your individual policy. If you bring in your policy booklet, we'll be glad to have Betty O’Dacre, our insurance coordinator, review it and advise you.
”Will I ever be without my teeth?”
Immediately following the placement of the implants, we advise our patients to go two or three days without their dentures to allow for healing. After that time, however, you may wear your denture comfortably until the final teeth are placed.
“How long have dental implants been in use?”
Implants are not new to the dental field. Modern medicine began the procedure in 1948 and they have been perfected in the last 3 decades. Dr. Moilanen has been placing implants since 1983. He's had a fellowship in the world's largest professional implant organization since 1992.
